Castro Marim and VRSA Marshland aims to become UNESCO Biosphere Reserve

The Municipality is applying for funds to enhance and promote the natural and cultural heritage of the site

The Municipality of Castro Marim has recently applied for the Castro Marim Marshland and VRSA Nature Reserve to be recognised as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Since its initial submission, the application for funding a comprehensive project to enhance and promote the natural and cultural heritage of the site is progressing and is currently awaiting a decision from the Management Authority.

It is expected that an Action Plan for the Nature Reserve will be developed to recognise the biodiversity conservation efforts, sustainable development, and scientific research carried out over the years, as well as to plan future innovative and developmental initiatives.

To ensure the visibility and effective implementation of this plan, it is essential to secure technical consultancy to guide the application process in accordance with UNESCO criteria, develop environmental monitoring programmes, create communication and marketing strategies, and acquire equipment.

This project also includes the rehabilitation of a warehouse in the salt pans, the renovation of the infrastructure at Castro Marim Wharf, and the modernisation and updating of the Interpretation Centre of the Santo António Revelim Territory, with a total investment of €683,599.01, an eligible investment of €594,175.47, and a maximum ERDF co-financing rate of 60% of the total eligible expenses.
