Communists query vote-counting in Lisbon’s municipal elections

Appeal to Constitutional Court for final ruling

CDU, the coalition that brings together the PCP communists and PEV (the greens), has appealed today to the Constitutional Court for a ruling on “the decisions taken during the general counting” of votes in the local elections in Lisbon eight days ago.

Sofia Lisboa, of CDU Lisboa, stresses this is a “normal process”, but in this case too, the difference in the number of votes between the coalition and the party that came in 3rd place (CHEGA) was very close – and meant that CDU only mustered one councillor, instead of the two it elected in the last municipal elections.

According to Sofia Lisboa, there are three situations at issue – a discrepancy in the number of votes published; a set of null votes, in which the voting intention expressed was CDU, but for one reason or other, did not translate to this effect, and that fact that in the case of other parties’ null votes were ‘considered valid’.

The Constitutional Court is expected to respond within two days, and the electoral process in Lisbon will not be finalised until that date.

According to provisional results published by the General Secretariat of the Ministry of Internal Administration, CHEGA, the party that failed to win elections to Lisbon City Council in 2021, was the third most voted this time round.

The elections of October 12 were won by sitting social democrat mayor Carlos Moedas, and his PSD/CDS-PP/IL coalition, with 41.69% of the votes, defeating socialist Alexandra Leitão (PS/Livre/BE/PAN), who had 33.95% of the votes.
