Desert dust to sweep across Portugal this week

Health authorities urge caution as Saharan particles cloud skies

A wave of dust from the Sahara Desert is set to drift over mainland Portugal starting Tuesday, bringing hazy skies and potential health concerns.

According to the Portuguese Sea and Atmosphere Institute (IPMA), dust concentrations are not expected to reach extreme levels, but the particles may linger in the atmosphere until Thursday, leaving the air heavier and the skies tinged with a familiar orange hue.

The national health board (DGS) is urging caution, particularly among the most vulnerable. Children, the elderly, and people with respiratory or cardiovascular conditions are being advised to stay indoors whenever possible, ideally with windows closed. Health authorities warn that inhalable particles known as PM10 can aggravate existing conditions and pose risks, especially to sensitive groups.

For the general population, the advice is to avoid prolonged physical exertion and limit outdoor activity and additional irritants such as tobacco smoke. People with chronic conditions are also reminded to maintain their prescribed treatments and, should symptoms worsen, to contact the Saúde 24 helpline (808 24 24 24) or seek medical assistance.
