Don’t put away your umbrellas: IPMA warns of very rainy week ahead

IPMA forecasts a “very rainy” period across Portugal from November 10 to 16

While the wet weather will let up slightly this weekend, the Portuguese Institute for the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) is forecasting a very rainy week across mainland Portugal between November 10 and 16, with a chance of thunderstorms in several regions.

According to the IPMA, the weather will be affected by a complex low-pressure system moving slowly northwest of the Iberian Peninsula. This system will bring rain fronts and unstable air masses, creating the ‘perfect storm’ for rain and thunder.

Rainfall totals are expected to be well above average, especially in the North and Centre regions, where 60 to 75 millimetres more rain than usual could fall. Across the rest of the country, precipitation will also be higher than normal, though the IPMA notes that totals may vary.

Temperatures should remain near or slightly above average for the time of year, with highs ranging from 10°C to 20°C in the North and Centre interior and 15°C to 21°C in the South and coastal areas, and lows from 2°C to 12°C inland, 8°C to 14°C in the South, and 9°C to 17°C along the coast.
