Faro’s Gago Coutinho Airport will close 2025 with its strongest performance on record, exceeding 10 million passengers for the first time. The figure represents a 6% increase compared to 2024 and comes in the year the airport celebrates its 60th anniversary.
International connectivity was significantly strengthened during 2025 with the launch of six new routes: Newark (United Airlines), Helsinki (Finnair), Reykjavik (Play), Funchal (TAP), Riga (airBaltic) and Krakow (Ryanair).
In addition, nine new operations were introduced, including Berlin (Eurowings), Bournemouth and London Luton (Jet2.com), Zurich (easyJet), Bordeaux (easyJet and Transavia France), London Gatwick (Wizz Air), London Southend (easyJet) and Amsterdam (TUI Netherlands).
Four new airlines joined regular operations, bringing the total number of carriers serving Faro to 33. The airport is now connected to 22 countries and 77 destinations, reinforcing its strategic role within Europe.
The United Kingdom remains Faro Airport’s largest market, accounting for 46% of total passenger traffic. Germany, Ireland, France and the Netherlands follow.
The winter season of 2024–25 was the strongest on record, with sustained growth helping to reduce seasonality. Between 2015 and 2025, winter traffic more than doubled.
Thierry Ligonnière, CEO of ANA | VINCI Airports, said: “Surpassing 10 million passengers is a historic milestone for Faro Airport in the year of its 60th anniversary. This achievement reflects the trust of passengers, airlines, partners and the local community, as well as the dedication of our teams. We will continue to invest in connecting the Algarve to the world, guided by an ambitious sustainability strategy to ensure a future as strong as the present.”
Says a statement by ANA Aeroportos de Portugal, “ANA | VINCI Airports continues to invest in the modernisation, operational efficiency and service quality of Portuguese airports. At Faro Airport, recent improvements include the complete renovation of the passenger terminal roof, upgrades to the air conditioning system and increased use of innovation and technology, notably through biometric systems and the introduction of new self-service baggage drop facilities.”
The airport has also renewed its vehicle fleet with low-emission models and acquired new emergency and rescue vehicles.
Gago Coutinho Airport has become a benchmark in environmental management, reducing its scope 1 and 2 emissions by more than 80% by 2025. Measures include 100% LED lighting, fleet electrification and the use of sustainable fuels such as HVO and SAF.
A strong commitment to renewable energy is reflected in the installation of a photovoltaic power plant, which has supplied around 30% of the airport’s electricity since 2022.
