The southern districts of Faro, Setúbal and Beja woke up under an orange weather warning – the second most serious – this Friday as heavy rain linked to Depression Claudia continued across the country, despite a calmer night than the one before.
The storm, which has already claimed two lives, has led to 2,212 incidents between midnight on Thursday and 7am today, including mostly floods and fallen trees.
A total of 7,018 operatives and 2,622 vehicles were deployed. The hardest-hit areas included the Lisbon and Setúbal metropolitan regions, the Algarve, and the district of Leiria, with Coimbra and Santarém also among the most affected, albeit to a lesser extent.
Faro, Setúbal and Beja will remain under orange alert until noon, after which they will be downgraded to yellow – the least serious.
Caution is also advised near coastal areas. The Costa Vicentina (the stretch of coast along the western Alentejo and Algarve), in particular, is expecting west/southwest waves of 4 to 4.5 metres into the evening. Waves of a similar height are forecast this weekend for the Algarve coast, the Setúbal peninsula, and Greater Lisbon.
Across mainland Portugal, a yellow alert remains in place for heavy showers, thunderstorms, and four- to five-metre waves along the coast until Saturday night.
Weather warnings are updated frequently on the Portuguese Sea and Atmosphere Institute (IPMA) website.
