Five armed men burst into family home in Cabeceiras de Basto

Hold family hostage; make off with “thousands of euros” in cash, plus jewellery

Five armed men terrorised a family in Cabeceira de Basto yesterday, taking them hostage in their home Cavez, and demanding money and jewellery which they eventually made off with.

According to reports, the men escaped with “thousands of euros in cash” and various items of gold.

It was only once they had gone that the family, a landowning couple and two grown-up children, were able to call police.

Braga PJ are now investigating.

Very little has been explained, or even ventured, as to how these five men will have decided on this family for a break-in. The father, aged 66, was hurt in the incident and received treatment in hospital.

The attack began at around 12.20 yesterday, and lasted roughly half an hour.

Coincidentally today the home of a young woman in a different village in Cabeceira de Basto was searched, following complaints that she had allegedly threatened another young woman with a gun. Police entering the suspect’s home found three shotguns and 274 cartridges (as seen in the image above). The information has been communicated to the local court.
