The body of a former president of the parish council of Vila Franca do Deão has been discovered carbonised.
Carlos Dâmaso died fighting a fire that began this morning in Pêra do Moço, in the municipality of Guarda.
His death has been confirmed by the current parish council president, Sérgio Costa, who has told O Interior local media outlet that two other people have been seriously injured, one of whom has been transferred to a hospital in Coimbra.
As Portugal’s wildfires continue, increasingly more people are requiring medical assistance for burns/ smoke inhalation, and other consequences. A number of firefighters have also been hurt.
Carlos Dâmaso’s death today is the first so far reported due to this year’s fires. He is understood to have been in his 40s and still very much involved in local political life. According to asbeiras.pt,he was standing for the parish council in the October elections as an independent.
