Convés Espumante Branco, produced by the Cardoso Family at Herdade da Lisboa, in the municipality of Vidigueira (in the Alentejo region), was voted one of the 50 Best Sparkling Wines in the World 2026 by the prestigious ‘Wine Pleasures’ (organisers of events for the wine import/export industry).
Convés Espumante Branco is the only Portuguese sparkling wine on the international list achieving a ‘gold’ rating, which brings together labels of excellence from some of the most renowned terroirs in the world.
Writing about this achievement, Nascer do Sol online news site says: “Although born in the heart of the Alentejo, it is the sea that inspires the name Convés (deck). Vasco da Gama, one of the leading figures of the Portuguese Discoveries, held the title of Count of Vidigueira, the village that today gives rise to this unique sparkling wine – and it was the navigator’s voyages on Portuguese ships that gave the wine its name.
“Produced according to the traditional method, Convés Espumante Branco is aged for 18 months, revealing an elegant and precise profile. In the glass, aromas of white pulp and citrus fruits emerge, while in the mouth the fine and persistent bubbles ensure a balanced, creamy and smooth ensemble, always marked by a very appealing freshness.”
Described as “extremely versatile”, this Portuguese sparkling wine goes well with “rich fish and seafood dishes, as well as roast suckling pig”.
The only other two Portuguese sparkling wines featuring on the international list are Espumante Reserva Bruto Quinta D’Aguieira (Quinta D’Aguieira, Valongo do Vouga, Águeda) and La Mer (Vicentino Wines, Alentejo coast), both earning a ‘silver’ rating.
It might actually be too late to add any of these to your shopping list for this New Year’s Eve, but as some of the best sparkling wines in the world, you may want to consider a mid-January toast!
