Government needs to redefine priorities

THE NEW PSD leader, Manuela Ferreira Leite, has blasted the government for investing millions on public works projects at a time when the country is full of “desperate people”.

Speaking at the annual PSD Congress in Guimarães, the Portuguese ‘Iron Lady’ told delegates that now was not the time “to be thinking about expensive public works projects the country could ill afford”.

“The country is facing an emergency social situation that requires immediate action,” she said. “We need urgent intervention to fight poverty and help the new poor (lower middle classes).”

She called for the urgent reform of the Portuguese National Health System (SNS). Ferreira Leite said that a new universal health system needed to be created whereby those who could pay contributed and those who couldn’t pay didn’t.
