Innovative beach safety device for Carvoeiro – with video

Equipment ensures “fast, effective response” in emergency situations at sea, “even in adverse conditions”

Beach safety in Carvoeiro has been reinforced with the acquisition of a U SAFE device, announced the Union of Parishes of Lagoa and Carvoeiro.

In a press statement, it said: “Aware of the importance of ensuring the safety of all those who visit our coastal area, the Union of Parishes of Lagoa and Carvoeiro has acquired a U SAFE device for Carvoeiro beach. This innovative equipment will be used not only during the bathing season, but throughout the year, under a protocol to be signed with the concessionaire of that beach.”

According to the local authority, “U SAFE is a self-propelled, remotely-controlled maritime rescue system, developed to be a ‘fast and accurate aquatic robot’, capable of quickly reaching people in danger at sea. With a U-shaped hull and two side turbines, the device maintains its functionality regardless of its position in the water, thanks to a sophisticated guidance and navigation system.

“Designed to be simple and intuitive to use, U SAFE allows anyone, even without prior training, to perform a rescue with great precision. Its greatest advantage lies precisely in its ability to operate in adverse conditions, such as rough seas or rocky areas, avoiding putting the rescuer or a support vessel at risk.”

The neighbouring beaches of Vale de Centianes and Benagil already have this equipment, to ensure effective response in emergency situations at sea.

After the equipment was installed, a rescue simulation was carried out at Carvoeiro beach where the equipment demonstrated its effectiveness and speed of response in a realistic scenario.
