The future of medical technology has found a home in Carvoeiro, Lagoa, with Medicalaser Clinic, a specialist centre offering treatments that go beyond aesthetics and are particularly suitable for athletes.
Alongside anti-ageing and rejuvenation options, the clinic provides therapies specifically aimed at golfers, including treatment for musculoskeletal injuries.
In golf, back, shoulder, elbow, wrist, and hand pain are common, often caused by repetitive swing movements, poor posture, or inadequate warm-up, making both prevention and treatment essential.
At the Medicalaser Clinic, procedures are not only quick and straightforward but also highly effective and manageable for both doctor and patient, explains Dr Luís Carito, who has practised medicine since 1984 and oversees this specialty at the clinic. He notes that golfers’ pain and discomfort can be alleviated using Fotona’s SP Dynamis Laser with the ComfortLase – Photobiomodulation (PBM) technique.
This non-invasive treatment, which accelerates healing and is clinically validated, uses the MarcCo handpiece and low-level visible-to-infrared light. “It stimulates cells to heal naturally, relieves pain and reduces inflammation through a process that accelerates tissue regeneration, boosts cellular metabolism, increases lymphatic flow, and stimulates microcirculation,” says Dr Carito.
During therapy, PBM energy is absorbed by the enzyme cytochrome c oxidase in the cell mitochondria, resulting in increased ATP – the body’s natural fuel for cellular activity and metabolism – whilst mild oxidants are produced that drive gene transcription and cellular repair. The benefits are extensive, including vasodilation, improved blood and lymph circulation, accelerated tissue regeneration, analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects, and stimulation of cellular metabolism and microcirculation.
Focused on relieving pain and restoring functional capacity, the treatment “typically produces very favourable outcomes”, notes Dr Carito. It is suitable for tendon and muscle injuries and may involve several sessions, each of short duration. More complex cases, particularly chronic injuries or those with prolonged development, may require ultrasound-guided injectable corticosteroids at the injury site, he ads.
The clinic also offers a treatment with PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma), which “is recommended for certain conditions, as it helps speed up injury recovery by rapidly increasing, at the site of the lesion, the production of collagen, elastin and other factors that promote healing, whilst also providing a pain-relieving effect,” explains Dr Luís Carito.
Prevention remains vital: warming up, practising proper technique for each type of stroke, strengthening the muscles of the back, shoulders, elbows, and wrists, avoiding overload, stretching, staying hydrated, and considering orthopaedic supports to protect movements and speed recovery.
In addition to Fotona SP Dynamis, the clinic offers other treatments focused on enhancing natural beauty. These include Fotona4D facial lifting, Fotona4D for men, dark-circle reduction, nail fungus (onychomycosis) treatment, localised fat reduction, snoring therapy, non-invasive lip fillers, permanent hair removal, acne and scar therapy, and hair stimulation.
