An unusual friendly training match took place at the Amendoeira Sports Club on May 19 as the senior ladies team from the Republic of Ireland took on
the junior team from Portimonense SC.
The Irish team were in the Algarve as part of a training programme to prepare them for the UEFA 2013 tournament to be held in Sweden.
The team’s first qualifier is in Wales on September 17, followed by a match against France in Ireland on September 22.
Gavin Costello, the operational organiser from the Football Association of Ireland (FAI), said: “The girls are really dedicated and appreciate the chance to attend the training camp to improve their skills. It’s all about tactics, improving fitness and team building.”
The game proved to be a hard fought match, with the strength of the Portimonense juniors proving to be the winning factor in a 2-0 victory.
