Community rallies to help Lagoa animal sanctuary

Online appeal launched as rising costs put pressure on Jardim da Aryel

Residents and local businesses are coming together to support Jardim da Aryel, as the Lagoa-based animal sanctuary struggles with rising food and veterinary bills.

The association has launched an online campaign, “Cost of Living Crisis Appeal – Help Our Association Continue”, warning that while it remains a small sanctuary, the need around it is enormous. So far, nearly €1,500 of the €2,000 target has already been raised.

Every day, the shelter provides food, medical care and safety for more than 300 cats, as well as dogs, goats and even a donkey, all of them animals that were abandoned, injured or unwanted. For many, the sanctuary represents a last chance.

“Our food and veterinary bills are eye-watering, and like so many others, we have been hit incredibly hard by the cost-of-living crisis,” the association, led by founder Irene Nunes, says in its appeal. “Donations have slowed, not because people don’t care, but because fewer people are able to help – and we completely understand that.”

Despite financial pressures, the daily demands remain unchanged. “The animals still need feeding. They still need medication, emergency vet care, neutering, and daily attention. They still rely on us — and now, we are relying on you.”

According to the charity, every contribution helps to feed hundreds of animals each day, pay urgent medical bills and continue rescuing animals with nowhere else to go. For those unable to donate, sharing the appeal online can also make a difference.

Meanwhile, a sold-out fundraising lunch at Pashmina Restaurant in Carvoeiro is set to take place on Sunday, March 1, with volunteers and local businesses donating raffle prizes and backing the cause.

“From all of us at Jardim da Aryel, and from every paw, hoof, and whisker in our care – thank you for standing with us. Your kindness keeps this sanctuary alive.”
