Loulé MED Festival unveils “most international edition” yet

22nd edition promises biggest international line-up ever as Loulé becomes a four-day world music capital

Loulé’s MED Festival is gearing up for its most international edition ever in 2026, with artists from 30 countries converging on the town’s historic centre between June 25 and 28.

Unveiled at the BTL tourism fair currently taking place in Lisbon, the 22nd edition will see the Algarve event further establish itself as a global world music hub, bringing together sounds from Africa, Latin America, Europe and Asia in what organisers describe as a return to the festival’s original DNA.

Over 50 concerts will unfold across five main stages, turning the old town into a crossroads of cultures, rhythms and languages.

This year’s line-up includes internationally recognised names such as Goran Bregović, Salif Keita, Sean Kuti & The Egypt 80, Tiken Jah Fakoly and Portugal’s Sérgio Godinho, alongside artists from Cuba, Chile, Pakistan, Hungary, Angola, Cabo Verde and beyond.

Festival director Paulo Silva says 2026 will “reposition MED as a world music festival in its purest sense”, with an “eclectic and heterogeneous line-up” reflecting multiple countries and traditions.

Expanding further, Loulé mayor Telmo Pinto says the event continues to grow as a cultural reference point not only for the Algarve but for Portugal as a whole. “MED is certainly one of the country’s major cultural landmarks,” he said, stressing the municipality’s commitment to strengthening the festival’s qualitative growth and international standing.

This year also brings significant structural changes aimed at strengthening the festival experience and expanding its reach, organisers say. The venue area will be enlarged, a new MED Lounge space introduced, and the municipal market fully integrated into the programme with continuous activities.

A new ticketing system, expanded street food area, additional performance spaces for street artists and revised opening hours are also planned. Meanwhile, a new entrance near Largo de São Francisco will be used to improve access, joining the existing access points near the Municipal Market and Castelo de Loulé.

Organisers are also launching the “Cidade MED” concept, extending decorations and initiatives throughout the town in the lead-up to the festival.

Alongside the concerts, a new MED Conference Cycle will bring together personalities from the arts and other sectors, further broadening the event’s scope.

Tickets go on sale on Monday, March 2 at 6pm and can be purchased at www.bol.pt or the event’s website. As usual, there will be one free-entry day (on June 28).
