Man arrested for attempted stabbing murder in Portimão

Suspect fled to the north after leaving the victim with a life-threatening injury

A 30-year-old man suspected of stabbing another man during an argument in Portimão and fleeing the scene, leaving him with a life-threatening injury, has been tracked down and arrested in the north of Portugal, PJ police have announced.

The attack took place on December 17 when the 29-year-old victim tried to intervene after seeing a friend involved in a street fight.

In his attempts to calm the situation, the victim was stabbed with a flick knife concealed in the attacker’s sleeve. The blade, measuring around 15 centimetres, struck one of the victim’s kidneys.

The injured man was rushed to Portimão Hospital in a life-threatening condition, where he underwent emergency surgery and was admitted to intensive care, PJ police say in a statement to the press.

After the attack, the suspect fled to the north of the country but was later tracked down by investigators, who arrested him on suspicion of attempted murder and possession of a prohibited weapon.

He will now be brought before a judge for a first judicial hearing to determine coercive measures.
