Man swallowed by sinkhole in Lagoa

Victim was trapped for two hours before being able to call for help

A 65-year-old man was trapped for around two hours in a sinkhole which suddenly opened in the ground this week in Lagoa.

The incident took place at around 5am on Monday morning (February 9) on an access path to Senhora da Rocha beach in Porches, Lagoa. The man was out walking when the ground beneath him gave way, causing him to plunge into the hole.

According to reports in the national press, the man was only able to use his phone to call a family member for help after two hours. Firefighters from Lagoa were called in after the alert was raised by the victim’s relative and carried out the rescue operation.

Once removed from the crater, the man was treated at the scene before being taken to Portimão Hospital. Despite the fall, he reportedly suffered only minor injuries.

The collapse was seemingly caused by excess water in the soil, which weakened the ground and led to the sudden opening of the crater.

Maritime police have isolated the site and surrounding areas due to ground instability.
