Nearly 900 hectares approved for new vineyards across Portugal

Portugal’s wineamaking sector continues to grow

Portugal is set to grow even more wine. The country’s Vine and Wine Institute (IVV) has approved 485 new vineyard applications, giving the green light to almost 900 hectares of fresh planting nationwide, it announced on Thursday.

In total, 896.793 hectares were authorised, with every eligible application receiving the full area requested.

The Vinho Verde region had the largest areas approved with 255.4 hectares, followed by Lisbon with 173.4 hectares, and Tejo with 102.8 hectares.

At the other end of the scale, Madeira, Douro, and the Azores received the smallest shares – just a few hectares each. Despite its global fame, the Douro region saw only 4.3 hectares approved and still has 13 applications waiting in line.

Strict limits are in place for Douro due to its protected status. Only 4.4 hectares were up for grabs this year – just 0.1 hectares for Port wine production and 4.2 hectares for other Douro wines.

This year’s tender opened 2,415 hectares for new vines, but demand didn’t keep pace. The IVV received 502 applications, requesting a total of 924.5 hectares, well below the area available.

According to the IVV, many eligible applicants are expected to submit in future rounds. A similar situation happened when the process first launched in 2016, and again in 2024.
