New mobile breast screening unit needed for the Algarve

In 2005 the Algarve Oncology Association implemented a breast cancer screening programme in the Algarve. Since that time there have been over 70,000 screenings targeting women between the ages of 50 and 60 – the age group with the highest risk of developing breast cancer.

However, over the past eight years technology has continued to evolve and improve, and updated equipment is now available. Also, international guidelines have changed and now recommend that breast cancer screening include women between the ages of 40 to 49.

To meet these new requirements a new mobile breast screen unit is badly needed in the Algarve region. The estimated costs of a new mobile breast screening unit are €110,000 for a new vehicle, €250,000 for new tomography equipment and €100,000 for a new data centre.

To finance this project, Rotary Club Estoi Palace International has joined with other Rotary clubs in the Algarve to raise funds for this worth cause.

“With the strength of our Rotary partners and the support of the Portuguese people behind us, we know we will eventually reach our goal,” said organisers.

Rotary clubs throughout the Algarve are already planning fundraising events to help reach the target.

Rotary Club Estoi Palace International will be holding a Robbie Burns Night on January 25, 2014, complete with cocktail reception, haggis, steak dinner, prize raffle and Scottish country dancing. Reservations: 962839697 | jim.bell@amazing-golf.eu
