The number of new vehicles registered in Portugal rose to 264,821 in 2025, an increase of 6.2% compared with 2024, according to data released on Friday by the Portuguese Automobile Association (ACAP).
Between January and December, registrations of light passenger vehicles reached 225,039 units, up 7.3% year on year.
Electrified vehicles continued to gain ground. In 2025, 69.7% of new light passenger cars were powered by alternative energy sources, including electric and hybrid models. Fully electric vehicles accounted for 23.2% of new registrations.
Registrations of heavy vehicles totalled 7,481 units over the year, representing a 3.2% increase compared with 2024.
In December alone, 24,978 vehicles were registered in Portugal, up 3% on the same month a year earlier. Of these, 20,879 were passenger cars, reflecting a year-on-year rise of 3.5%.
The light commercial vehicle segment recorded a 2.2% decline in December, with 3,498 units registered. By contrast, the heavy vehicle market — covering both passenger and goods vehicles — grew strongly, with sales up 24.4% year on year to 601 units.
