This autumn, Swedish artist Daniel Hasselmyr invites visitors on a journey back in time.
From October 3 to December 31, his new exhibition at Moldopoli in Lagos brings to life the colours, architecture, and atmosphere of the Algarve during the 1970s and 80s, inspired by his early travels through the region.
Hasselmyr is recognised for his bold and distinctive approach to watercolour. Unlike traditional seascapes or soft-toned landscapes, his work often features vivid, geometric depictions of industrial architecture.
His artistic journey changed significantly after his first visit to the Algarve in 1978, when the region’s colourful homes and vibrant lifestyle evoked memories of his childhood in South America. That spark has continued to influence his work for five decades.
“The Algarve has always reminded me of the places that first awakened my love for colour and form,” Hasselmyr says.
Over his 50-year career, Hasselmyr has exhibited widely across many countries, earning awards and recognition in juried exhibitions. His recent works also include delicate studies of flowers, furthering his exploration of shape and colour.
