Olhão moves to repair storm-damaged roads

Three municipal teams sent out as soon as weather improved, council says

The municipal council of Olhão has begun repairing roads damaged by recent storms, saying it moved in as soon as weather conditions allowed.

As a result of Storm Kristin and other winter storms that battered Portugal this winter, several roads were left in poor condition. Some were affected by ongoing works that had to be temporarily halted, while others suffered direct damage from the bad weather.

With the return of the Algarve’s more usual sunny conditions, municipal teams immediately started work to restore safe driving and traffic flow, the council says in a statement to the press.

“As soon as the rains stopped, we put three teams on the streets to go to the places where this rehabilitation was most urgent. We made this commitment to the people of Olhão and, as promised, when the first rays of sunshine appeared, we sent our teams out to repair the damage and restore normality to our roads,” mayor Ricardo Calé says in the statement.

Calé also pointed to ongoing investment in the municipality’s road network, which covers more than 800 kilometres of roads and rural paths.

“An example of this was the resurfacing of the Olhão Industrial Zone in November, the Cavalinha area in December, the new street near the Olhão Skate Park in January and now, in February, the start of works on Estrada da Jornada. In the first four months of our term, we have already completed €1.5 million in investment in roads,” he said.

The mayor acknowledged that such projects require significant funding but said the strategy of continuous improvement will continue.

“These are works that involve major investment, and we will continue to do so, just as we will continue to pay attention to specific situations, like those we are now addressing,” he concluded.

The municipality said repairs will continue over the coming days in phases, focusing first on the worst-affected areas, with the aim of improving mobility and safety for residents and visitors.
