Over 1,000 weather incidents reported across Portugal

Torrential rain batters mainland Portugal

Over 1,000 weather-related incidents were recorded across mainland Portugal between midday on Tuesday and 8am today, most of them due to flooding, according to the National Authority for Emergency and Civil Protection (ANEPC).

Speaking to Lusa news agency, ANEPC’s Elísio Pereira said 211 incidents were registered in the city of Lisbon and 764 in the remaining districts of Portugal due to the heavy rain – including 40 in the Algarve.

Most of the reported situations involved flooded roads (679) and fallen trees (18).

No injuries were reported overnight, although on Tuesday a woman was seriously hurt after flooding hit Barcarena, in Oeiras – one of the areas most prone to severe weather.

IPMA issued a red warning for Faro district until 10am., before downgrading it to orange until 3pm. Évora, Setúbal and Beja remain under an orange alert, while Santarém and Lisbon are under yellow until midday. Castelo Branco and Portalegre are also under yellow until 3pm.

A red warning signals an extreme weather risk, orange indicates moderate to high risk, and yellow alerts cover specific weather-sensitive activities.
