Grilled sardines remain the main attraction of the festival
It’s still weeks away, but Portimão is already “all set” for its nationally famous Sardine Festival (Festival da Sardinha), which will run from August 5 to 10.
The event, which aims to blend tradition and innovation, will begin on August 5 at 11am with the traditional reenactment of the sardine offloading at Gil Eanes quay. Visitors are invited to relive the hustle and bustle of the old fish market in this “immersive and authentic cultural experience”, which will also be streamed live on the Municipality of Portimão’s Facebook page. During the reenactment, 3,000 tasting vouchers will be handed out, each good for two grilled sardines in bread and a drink. These can be redeemed daily from 6pm to midnight at five food stands operated by local associations.
Grilled sardines remain the main attraction of the festival. Visitors can enjoy the classic “Prato Festival” – five grilled sardines, bread, boiled potatoes, and Algarve-style salad for €11 (no drink included). Other menus, snacks, desserts, and regional products will also be available, offering something for every palate.
Beyond the festival grounds, six local restaurants – Dona Barca, Forte e Feio, Retiro do Peixe Assado, Peixarada, Ú Venâncio and Zizá – will offer special sardine dishes at prices set by each venue.
Those looking to learn how to make their own sardine dishes will be able to participate in the daily showcooking events taking place from August 6 to 10 at 7.30pm. On August 6, chef Luís Oliveira (Restaurante F) will prepare a sardine tiborna; on August 7, chef Nuno Martins (Restaurante NUMA) will present a sardine and sweet potato cataplana; August 8 will feature chef José Moura (Tivoli Lagos) with a grilled sardine cornetto; on August 9, chefs Leandro Silva and Catarina Monteiro (Gastro Theatre DUOO) will create a sardine waffle (gaufra); and on August 10, chef João Oliveira (VISTA Restaurante) will serve an interpretation of sardine soup using battered sardines (sopa de sardinhas albardadas). Each culinary demonstration will be accompanied by Algarve wines, presented and offered for tasting by the Algarve Wine Commission (CVA).
Meanwhile, three stages will offer live music each day, although the focus will be on the main stage, where top Portuguese acts will perform every night from 10pm: Rui Veloso (August 5); Pedro Abrunhosa (August 6); Diogo Piçarra (August 7); Nena (August 8); Para Sempre Marco (August 9) and Resistência (August 10).
The festival will also feature a new-look lounge area, offering a relaxing space with games, promotions, and event information.
Further information about the festival, which is free to visit, is available on its official website (www.festivaldasardinha.pt).
