Portimão has been named “Sport Destination of the Year 2026” for municipalities with 50,000–100,000 residents, receiving national recognition from the Municípios Amigos do Desporto (Sport-Friendly Municipalities) programme.
The award highlights the town’s ambitious strategy of using sport as a key driver for tourism and the local economy.
The accolade was announced by mayor Álvaro Bila at the BTL tourism fair in Lisbon, where he praised Portimão’s position as a hub for active tourism. “Sport in Portimão is no longer just a physical activity, it’s a cornerstone of our economy,” said the mayor. He added that the accolade reflects the municipality’s “ability to turn Portimão into a leading destination, capable of attracting thousands of visitors outside the summer season.”
Portimão’s strategy combines top-tier sports venues with a packed calendar of events. The highlight is the world-famous Algarve International Circuit, which annually hosts MotoGP and is confirmed to welcome the return of Formula 1 racing in 2027 and 2028. Together, these events generate more than €200 million in economic impact. Meanwhile, international events at the Portimão Marina – from the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race to the World Adaptive Sailing Championship – and competitions like the International Masters Futsal tournament, which alone generated €5.9 million in media exposure, further cement the town’s global sporting reputation.
Portimão’s beaches, including Praia da Rocha, also host major events like Beach Travels and Deep Dish, drawing thousands of participants each year. All of this activity boosts hotels, restaurants, and local businesses, the local council points out.
The local strategy also focuses on promoting ‘Sports for All’, supporting children, youth, and seniors to stay active and healthy.
“With a combination of diverse and qualified sports infrastructure across the municipality, combined with natural assets such as the sea, river, and hills, Portimão has established itself as one of southern Portugal’s top destinations for year-round sports tourism,” the council says in a statement.
“This capacity to offer top year-long conditions for multiple sports proves that this is a strategic investment in the sustainable development of our territory, the quality of life of the population and the municipality’s national and international notoriety,” it adds.
