Portugal chases first U-17 World Cup title in showdown with Austria

Portugal is the reigning European U-17 champion and will look to add the world title to its trophy room

Portugal will try to make history this Thursday (November 27) as the country’s male under-17 football team lines up against Austria in the World Cup final, kicking off at 4pm (Lisbon time) in Doha, Qatar.

The European champions, appearing in the tournament for only the fourth time, have never reached the final before — just like Austria. Portugal’s best result until now was a third-place finish back in 1989.

This year’s run has been one of Portugal’s strongest ever. The team booked its place in the final by knocking out Brazil on penalties (6–5) after a tense 0–0 draw in the semis. Before that, they swept past Switzerland (2–0) in the quarters, Mexico (5–0) in the round of 16, and Belgium (2–1) in the last 32. Portugal finished second in Group B, behind Japan, but ahead of Morocco and New Caledonia, both beaten by wide margins (6–0 and 6–1).

The match will be aired live on RTP1 in Portugal, as well as online on RTP Play.
