Portugal has “important conversation” with US over trade, tech and defence

US secretary Marco Rubio talks with Foreign Minister Paulo Rangel

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Portuguese Foreign Minister Paulo Rangel have had an “important conversation” on ways to deepen bilateral cooperation on trade, technology and defence.

According to US diplomatic spokesperson Tammy Bruce, the two men discussed “the strengths of the bilateral relationship.”

“Both leaders expressed their commitment to promoting transatlantic security and economic prosperity for the benefit of both nations,” Bruce said in a State Department statement.

On social network X, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs referred to the “important conversation” in which the pairs “reviewed the bilateral agenda (…) and reaffirmed the excellence of the historical relations between the two countries”.

These conversations come after the United States has scaled back its diplomatic presence throughout Europe, and has pulled out of a number of bilateral exchange programmes with universities.
