Portimão Marina has been named Portugal’s “Most Blue Marina 2025” by the European Blue Flag Association (ABAE) and the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA).
The award, presented at the UATLA Auditorium at Fábrica da Pólvora in Barcarena, recognises the marina’s leadership in environmental management and education.
The marina achieved the highest score among the 18 Portuguese marinas and recreational ports currently holding the Blue Flag, marking the first time it has received this distinction.
Over the past year, the marina carried out a range of environmental awareness initiatives involving residents, schools, visitors and local organisations. Partners including the municipal council of Portimão, Teia d’Impulsos Association, Vela Solidária and Algarve Sun Boats contributed to activities promoting marine conservation and sustainability.
The award highlights facilities that not only meet the Blue Flag programme’s strict standards, covering water quality, safety, environmental management, and accessibility, but also excel in environmental education and community engagement.
“This award is a recognition of the ongoing work of our team and partners in promoting environmental best practices. We will continue to invest in projects that inspire and mobilise the community towards a more sustainable future,” the management of Portimão Marina says in a statement.
The “Most Blue Marina 2025” title follows other recent achievements, including an international certificate of excellence from the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) for 25 consecutive years of Blue Flag status. The marina also maintains sustainability-focused facilities such as selective waste collection, wastewater treatment systems, electric vehicle charging stations and solar energy solutions, it says.
These distinctions add to a growing list of awards for Portimão Marina, including “Best Marina in Southern Europe” at the 2025 World Luxury Travel Awards, the “SuperYacht Ready Marina” certification, the Jack Nichol Award, the “5 Gold Anchors” and the International Clean Marina certification. These accoladades, the marina’s management says, help consolidate it as “one of the most acclaimed and sustainable marinas in the country.”
