President poised to appoint PM today

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa will hold meetings with the AD, CHEGA and PS leaders

With the full election results now confirmed, including the votes from Portuguese citizens abroad, President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa is poised to reappoint Luís Montenegro as Portugal’s Prime Minister this Thursday (May 29).

Speaking on Monday, Marcelo confirmed that he will hold final meetings with the leaders of the three most-voted parties – the PSD-led Democratic Alliance (AD), CHEGA (now Portugal’s main opposition party), and the Socialist Party (PS) – before making his decision.

“If I have the conditions to issue the nomination that same day, I will,” the President told reporters after an event in Lisbon’s Convento do Beato.

The timetable is already in place: the meetings will take place at the Presidential Palace in Belém on Thursday afternoon, with AD, Chega, and PS scheduled for 3pm, 4pm and 5pm, respectively. The meetings come one day after the final tally of overseas ballots confirmed the parliamentary seat distribution, with AD securing 91 seats, CHEGA 60 and PS 58.
