Prosecutors office still waiting for “additional information” on PM’s family firm

Spinumviva was the reason for Portugal’s snap elections

The Attorney General’s Office has confirmed today that prosecutors have requested additional information from ‘former prime minister Luís Montenegro’ as part of the preliminary investigation into company Spinumviva and is still awaiting the submission of these documents.

Lusa uses the term ‘former prime minister’ as the country is now technically in a governmental nomansland: until the new government has been formed – even if Luís Montenegro is set to lead it – he cannot be called ‘the prime minister’.

The Attorney General’s confirmation follows questions sent by Lusa news agency over probes into the dealings of both Luís Montenegro, and outgoing PS secretary-general Pedro Nuno Santos. The bottom line is that both men have been asked to provide additional information, and neither has, as yet, complied.

The two preliminary investigations are being conducted by the Central Department of Investigation and Penal Action (DCIAP).

The case involving Spinumviva erupted onto the scene early this year, finally leading the government to table a motion of confidence, which was rejected by parliament, triggering last Sunday’s elections.

Regarding the probe into property transactions of Pedro Nuno Santos, a preliminary investigation was opened more than a month ago. The Attorney General suggests the matter will be “reviewed again next week, possibly even this week.”
