PSP union calls national protest for next Thursday (October 16)

Denounces government’s lack of interest in tackling police problems in 2026 State Budget

With police syndicates already scheduling days of protest later this month, the SPP/ PSP union has called a national protest for next Thursday (October 16), citing the government’s perceived lack of interest in solving well-known problems in the 2026 State Budget (due to be presented to parliament at the end of the month).

In a statement, the SPP/PSP denounces “the lack of political weight demonstrated by Minister of Internal Administration Maria Lúcia Amaral to solve problems” (…) such as the lack of candidates for training courses for agents and the increase in requests to leave the PSP force, at the same time as it says it is ‘witnessing the dissemination by other government officials of solutions for other public servants’.

The protest is scheduled for Largo da Penha de França, in front of the PSP national headquarters, followed by a slow march to the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

This announcement comes after SINAPOL, another union in the sector, announced four days of protest between October 21-24, to demand salary and career advancement for police officers.

The SPP/PSP describes a degradation in the working conditions of PSP police officers in its statement, an increase in cases of physical and mental exhaustion (‘burnout’), in addition to an unsustainable working environment and an increase in sick leave and suicides.
