Road deaths up 31% this year in Portugal

60 people killed in traffic accidents so far

Road accidents have claimed 60 lives in Portugal so far this year, up 31% on the same period in 2025, according to provisional data from the National Road Safety Authority (ANSR).

The ANSR daily accident report shows that there were 16,498 accidents on Portuguese roads between January 1 and February 8 – 2,107 more than the 14,391 recorded in the same period last year.

These accidents led to the death of 60 people, 14 more than the same period last year, while 195 people were seriously injured (down nine) and 3,796 suffered minor injuries (down 418).

Porto recorded the highest number of accidents with 3,070, followed by Lisbon (2,770), Braga (1,490) and Aveiro (1,415). The lowest figures were in Portalegre (139), Bragança (157), Guarda (200) and Évora (231).

Lisbon, Leiria and Braga each reported eight road deaths, while Aveiro had seven. Beja, Castelo Branco, and the Azores registered no fatalities.

The ANSR notes that the figures only include deaths confirmed at the scene or en route to hospital.

So far, no link has been made between these accidents and the extreme weather that has marked the start of 2026, which has made roads more hazardous.
