Second shipwreck in days claims lives of Indonesian fishermen

One dead, four missing on boat that sinks 200 nautical miles from Aveiro

In the second tragedy in a matter of days, further fishermen are missing – they have been described, as the others before them, as Indonesian.

Today’s disaster took place 200 nautical miles from Aveiro. Of the crew of seven, one has been recovered but did not survive, and four others are missing.

The alert was received shortly before 8am, via the Emergency Position Indicator Radio Beacon (EPRIB) on the boat itself.

Information was that the fishing boat was ‘taking on water, explains a statement issue by the Navy.

Two hundred nautical miles translates into 370 kms from Aveiro – so it was not a ‘simple matter of sending out a lifeboat team’.

As often happens in these cases, the boat closest to the vicinity (in this case, another fishing boat) responded to the drama, managing to pluck three of the seven crew members (one of which later died) from the lifeboat they had scrambled into.

Another fishing boat and a merchant ship are currently looking for the missing four men, while the Figueira da Foz naval patrol boat has been activated, along with the Air Force.

Sadly, there is still no trace of the three Indonesian fishermen missing from the first shipwreck near Caminha on Sunday.
