The Sovereign Portuguese Art Prize returns this November for its fourth edition, bringing 30 works by some of the country’s most compelling contemporary artists to Lisbon.
The finalists were selected from nearly 200 nominations submitted by leading critics, curators, and academics. Their artworks will be exhibited at the Sociedade Nacional de Belas Artes (SNBA) from November 26 to December 13, in a show that is free for the public to visit.

During this time, visitors can cast their vote for the Public Prize, while the international judging panel will decide the €25,000 Grand Prize. Running alongside, the SNBA will also showcase the 30 finalists of the Portugal Student Art Prize 2025, where visitors can cast their vote for the Student Public Prize winner.
The winners will be announced at the annual black-tie Gala, held on November 29 at the historic Palácio da Bacalhôa. The evening will bring together collectors, patrons, and supporters for a celebration that includes a live auction by Phillips, a performance by Dr. Draw, and a dinner in the palace setting.
This year also introduces a new accolade: the Women’s Prize, created in partnership with Sassy Women Society. €2,000 will be awarded to the highest-scoring female finalist, furthering efforts to raise the visibility of women artists in Portugal.
Founded in 2003, the Sovereign Art Foundation (SAF) has a dual mission: to promote contemporary art and to fund programmes that use art to support vulnerable children.

In Portugal, SAF runs art therapy initiatives in Lisbon, Estremoz, and Loulé, offering disadvantaged young people a safe and creative environment to express themselves and build confidence.
“The Prize has grown to become an important cultural event in Portugal,” says Howard Bilton, Founder and Chairman of SAF. “What makes it unique is that the proceeds don’t just support the artists but also go towards programmes that are helping children who need it most.”
For visitors to SNBA, the exhibition is a chance to see work by some of Portugal’s most exciting talents. For gala guests, it is an evening of art, performance, and philanthropy. For the Foundation, it is an opportunity to continue its commitment to creativity and community.
