State of Nation debate opens with reductions in business tax

… and increase in pensions supplement

With the country’s left-wing parties bristling in ‘outrage’ over the government’s sense of calm in ‘getting things done’, the State of the Nation debate has opened in parliament today with prime minister Luís Montenegro announcing reductions in IRC (business tax), and increases in the pensions supplement.

Currently at 21%, the government is proposing to bring the IRC tax levy down to 19% in 2026, 18% in 2027 and 17% in 2028.

For pensions, it will be approving on Friday a supplement for pensions up to €1,560 (the majority of pensions in this country come in well below this amount), which will be paid in September, a month before the municipal elections.

According to SIC reporting on the speech as it takes place in parliament, the value of this supplement for people receiving pensions up to €522.50 per month will be €200; €150 for pensions between €522.50 and €1,045, and €100 for pensions between €1,045 and €1,567.5.

More to come on any further ‘developments’: right now opposition MPs are busy criticising each other, and bemoaning the state of the health service, which the prime minister insists does have its good points (it is just that these are not as newsworthy as the less good points)…
