Storm alert: Regina brings wet weather to Algarve and southern Portugal

Bad weather is expected to continue until at least Wednesday

The Algarve and southern Portugal are in for a wet and wild start to the week. Depression Regina, a high-altitude storm system, is moving south of the Algarve and is expected to stir up unstable weather through Wednesday.

According to Algarve weather page Meteofontes, the storm is already impacting local weather. Thunderstorms have been reported over the Setúbal Peninsula, Greater Lisbon, and the Alentejo coast, while parts of western Algarve are already seeing rain.

Forecasters warn this isn’t just a passing shower. The system’s convective clouds mean heavy downpours could hit some areas while neighbouring spots stay dry. Hail is possible, and strong gusts of wind may lash the coast. Meteofontes even notes that rare extreme events, like tornadoes, can’t be completely ruled out in isolated areas.

Regina isn’t expected to clear until at least Wednesday, so umbrellas, caution, and a keen eye on the skies are a must.
