The Surf & Rescue programme is back in the Algarve with a new two-day edition in Sagres, introducing defibrillator training to help surfers save even more lives at sea.
Organised by the Portuguese Surf Schools Association (AESP) and the National Institute for Sea Rescue (ISN), the new Surf & Rescue 2.0 course takes place on November 5 and 6 at Mareta Beach, aiming to build a nationwide network of surf lifesavers ready to respond to emergencies.
The expanded format is designed for those who completed the basic Surf & Rescue course since 2020. This year, it includes INEM certification in Basic Life Support with Defibrillator and encourages the installation of life-saving equipment such as AEDs in surf schools.
Every year, Portuguese surfers and instructors informally assist in hundreds of sea rescues. Aware of this, the Surf & Rescue initiative bridges the gap between surfers and professional lifeguards, ensuring that coastal communities have more trained responders.
The course is also certified by IPDJ, granting three credits toward coach licence renewals, and includes first aid and oxygen administration training.
Participation is limited to 18 places and costs €90 to sign up.
More than 400 participants joined Surf & Rescue sessions across the country in 2024.
