Three Portuguese cities among world’s best for exploring on foot

New global ranking highlights Portugal’s growing appeal for walking tourism

Three Portuguese cities have been ranked among the world’s top 100 destinations for exploring on foot, according to a new international study.

Lisbon is the highest-placed Portuguese city, placed 10th worldwide, while Porto follows closely in 13th. Coimbra also makes the ranking at 92nd place.

The list, compiled by Freetour.com, is based on data from millions of travellers, including bookings, reviews and completed tours.

“These cities are recognised for their historic character, vibrant urban life and walkable areas, offering visitors the opportunity to explore their streets, landmarks and neighbourhoods at their own pace,” the website says in a statement. “Their presence in the ranking reflects the growing interest in Portugal as a destination for travellers seeking authentic, on-foot experiences.”

“Portugal offers a great variety of destinations that are ideal for exploring on foot, from larger capitals to smaller historic cities. We’ve seen increasing interest from travellers looking to discover these places through walking tours and local experiences,” said Ignacio Merino Romero, CEO of Freetour.com.

Budapest leads the global ranking, followed by Rome, Vienna, Barcelona and Madrid. Paris, Prague, Naples, Florence and Lisbon round out the top 10.
