A two-month-old baby has died in hospital after being struck by a car on Tuesday morning in Albufeira.
The infant was taken to Faro Hospital in critical condition but did not survive, according to the GNR police’s Territorial Command in Faro.
The accident took place at around 9.17am on Avenida dos Descobrimentos, one of the town’s main avenues. Both the baby, who was travelling in a stroller, and her mother were hit, but the mother was not injured, said Captain António Ramos, a spokesperson for the GNR in Faro.
“Initially, the driver fled the scene, but minutes later, he must have come to his senses and returned,” Ramos told Lusa news agency.
Emergency services transported the baby to Faro Hospital, where medical teams attempted to save her, but she died during the afternoon.
The case is now being investigated by the GNR’s Road Accident Investigation Unit.
