Vehicle market registers sharp fall

Portugal’s new vehicle market has experienced a sharp fall since the beginning of the year and, according to experts in the sector, this trend will continue for the rest of 2011, with this year expected to be one of the worst on record.

In August, 8,128 cars were sold, which represents a fall of 31.9% over the same period in 2010. And in the first eight months of this year, total sales were 114,310, a fall of 22.5% over the same period in 2010.

The market for light commercial vehicles fell 30.8% in August 2011, with 1,864 vehicles sold.  January to August total sales were 21,602, representing a fall of 23.5 % over the same period last year.

Some 184 heavy vehicles were sold in August, a drop of 21.7% over the same month last year, but year to date sales stood at 2,263 units, an increase of 1.1% over 2010.
