Vila do Bispo’s municipal budget for 2026, worth more than €26 million, has been formally approved by both the municipal council and assembly.
The document by the council was approved on January 23 with votes in favour from the ruling PSD administration, while PS and Chega abstained.
Final approval came from the municipal assembly on February 4, backed by the PSD and the parish councils, with PS abstaining and Chega voting against.
In a statement to the press, the local council says the budget reflects commitments made in 2025 and remains heavily dependent on external funding, particularly through the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR) and the Algarve 2030 programme.
“Despite financial constraints, the document already includes strategies aligned with the priorities of the new executive. However, the available funds do not allow for the full implementation of all planned measures,” the council says.
Education is one of the main priorities. The municipality will move forward with key projects, including plans to remodel São Vicente primary school and to build a canteen, library and sports hall. The design phase for the EB1 school in Vila do Bispo is also included.
Work is also nearing completion at EB1 No. 2 School in Sagres. A total of €285,000 has been allocated for renovation works, with an additional €200,000 set aside for equipment. The aim is to improve learning conditions and provide better facilities for students and staff.
Housing is another strategic focus. The budget includes funding for projects to build 25 cost-controlled housing units and 13 houses in the Areias area, in Budens. Project development is also planned for the Roça do Veiga housing development in Sagres.
The municipality will also complete the construction of 29 cost-controlled housing units in Senhora do Amparo, Vila do Bispo, representing an investment of over €2.8 million.
This housing project is being developed under a cooperation agreement with the Institute for Housing and Urban Rehabilitation (IHRU), as part of the 1.º Direito – Programme to Support Access to Housing, funded by the PRR.
In land-use planning, the executive is prioritising project development to prepare future works. This includes completing architectural and technical designs for the expansion of the cemeteries in Budens and Sagres, as well as projects and construction works for the municipal markets in Sagres and Vila do Bispo.
Health investment is led by the rehabilitation of the Vila do Bispo health centre. The project has a base price of €1,7 million, with €850,000 allocated for 2026 and the remaining amount scheduled for 2027. It is the largest single investment in the health sector within the budget.
