The 2025 edition of the Volta ao Algarve cycling competition generated a combined €36.5 million economic, media and tourism impact, the highest ever linked to the race.
The figures come from a joint study by the University of the Algarve and analytics company Cision, which highlights the growing power of the five-day cycling event both on the ground and in the global spotlight.
Of the total impact, €8.6 million was injected directly into the regional economy through spending by national and international visitors, participating teams and race-related activities. Media exposure accounted for the lion’s share, with an estimated €27.9 million, driven by the strong national and international coverage.
According to Cision, the race generated 1,525 news pieces – up 12% on the previous year – and around 56.9 million impressions – the number of times content about the event was potentially seen – a sharp 38% increase. Coverage included 43 hours of TV and radio broadcast and 127 advertising spots, valued at more than €3.5 million.
The Algarve’s flagship race was broadcast in 78 countries, reaching an estimated 4.8 million households via Eurosport 1 and 2, as well as streaming platforms HBO Max, Max and Discovery+.
Online, the numbers were just as strong. The event recorded over 4.5 million social media impressions across Facebook, Instagram and X, alongside over 690,000 page views on its official website.
The study also shows that more than one in five spectators (21.3%) were foreign visitors, mainly from the UK, Belgium and the Netherlands. Among Portuguese fans, Lisbon and the Tagus Valley led the way, accounting for 48.1% of fans.
Public feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with nearly 88% of fans rating the event as Good or Very Good, 96% saying they would recommend it, and 91% of local residents supporting the race being held every year.
The event also plays a key role in fighting seasonality, attracting visitors outside of the summer season. Almost 70% of visitors said they intend to return to the Algarve in winter, more than those who say they want to come back in summer (60%).
Media exposure particularly boosted the Algarve brand, which benefitted from €24.3 million of the €27.9 million total. Among host municipalities, Loulé (€5.7 million), Lagos (€4.46 million), Monchique (€4.26 million), Portimão (€3.61 million) and Lagoa (€3.39 million) stood out.
The Volta ao Algarve attracted 25 teams in its latest edition, including 13 WorldTour squads, helping cement its status as one of the key international races at the start of the cycling season.
The 2026 edition is scheduled to take place from February 18 to 22, featuring five stages across the Algarve.
