This week’s print edition marks our newspaper’s 36th anniversary as it was this very week in 1989 that the first edition of what was then the Algarve Resident hit the newsstands.
I joined the paper in 1998 and became editor in 2005. Over the years, we have lived through many changes, including to our name.
In 2022, we became the Portugal Resident, a decision that was taken at the time when our editorial policy broadened to bring our readers news of relevant happenings elsewhere in the country whilst never forgetting our original ethos as a newspaper to serve the expat community here in the Algarve.
But the fact is that, over the years, everyone who knows and loves the paper calls it ‘The Resident’, or even, ‘The Ressi’!
So, to mark our anniversary with this week’s edition, we decided to give a subtle refresh to the look of our pages and, more importantly, rebrand decisively as The Resident.
Our focus these days is, of course, as much on our online presence as it is on the print edition, but however you choose to consume The Resident, I hope that you appreciate what makes us different as a reliable news source in English about what is actually happening here in Portugal, be it good news or bad news.
