Teen “not wearing life jacket” in spite of being ‘unable to swim’
The body of an 18-year-old was recovered from the Lagoa do Falcão waterpark, in Torres Vedras, yesterday afternoon – an attraction visited by hundreds of children and teens every day.
At time of writing, the boy’s identity had not been revealed. He was taking part in a trip organised by Casa Pia, a Lisbon-based youth protection organisation.
According to reports, the boy did not know how to swim, but for reasons unexplained, he was not wearing a life jacket.
He apparently jumped into the water with another colleague at around 3.30pm, “close to the time the visit was due to end”, writes Correio da Manhã.
The colleague emerged from the water; the 18-year-old did not.
“The victim will have jumped without authorisation of the group’s monitors, or lifeguards at the park”, says the paper
Emergency services were called very quickly, but “there was nothing that could be done”.
The boy’s body was recovered half an hour later. “Due to the tragedy, a mobile psychological intervention unit from INEM was dispatched to support colleagues and the monitors who were in shock”, says Correio da Manhã.
GNR police are investigating.
