Algarve textile artist Vanessa Barragão – whose works have been displayed across the globe – has been officially named Ambassador of the Algarve Marine Observatory during the first Fórum Mar Portugal.
The event, organised by the observatory and held on Tuesday, March 3, brought together researchers, businesses, policymakers, students and stakeholders from the blue economy to demonstrate how a healthy ocean generates measurable economic, social, environmental and cultural value.
The honour recognises Barragão’s “distinctive artistic career” and her “active role in raising awareness about environmental protection and the preservation of marine ecosystems, as well as inspiring the reuse of industrial waste”.
The distinction was awarded by the Algarve Sea Science Centre (CCMar) through the Algarve Marine Observatory, an initiative dedicated to scientific research, conservation and the promotion of the region’s marine resources.
Organisers praised the Algarve-based artist for her consistent body of work inspired by ocean biodiversity and for her ability to engage both national and international audiences around the “urgency of sustainability”.
The appointment highlights “not only Barragão’s standing in the contemporary art world”, but also what was described as her “strong ethical position, aligned with the principles of the circular economy and environmental regeneration”.
Founder of Studio Vanessa Barragão in Albufeira, the Faro-born artist is known for exploring the relationship between materials, nature and consumerism. Her work places particular emphasis on reusing industrial waste and reviving traditional handicraft techniques.
Barragão has also previously exhibited at the Serralves Museum, Heathrow Airport, and the Oklahoma Museum of Science.
