Algarve group hosts talk on Palestine and global protest movement

Activist António Tonga to speak at free public event in Olhão

A pro-Palestine civic platform in the Algarve is organising a free public talk this week to debate the current situation in Palestine and the strength of the global protest movement.

The group, Algarve pela Palestina (Algarve for Palestine), is hosting the event on Saturday, March 7 at 4.30pm at Associação Cultural República 14, in Olhão.

The session, titled “The current situation in Palestine and the global pro-Palestine movement”, will feature activist António Tonga and is being described by organisers as an open and frank discussion.

In a statement, Algarve pela Palestina argues that since the start of what it calls a pseudo “ceasefire” in October 2025, many people have been left with the impression that violence against Palestinians has ended.

“Without justice there is no peace: there has to be an effective end to the occupation and genocide in Palestine and the accountability of Israel for its crimes against humanity,” the group says.

The organisers claim that since the ceasefire agreement was announced, there have been over 600 deaths and 1,500 injured in Israeli attacks, dozens of new “illegal annexations”, and a “drastic increase of violence” in the West Bank. They also point to restrictions on humanitarian agencies and continued attacks affecting journalists and healthcare workers, while also closing off affected territories from humanitarian aid and the press.

The statement further criticises recent military attacks by the USA and Israel in Iran, describing them as illegal under international law and warning of renewed hardship in Gaza.

António Tonga, who was born in Angola in 1993 and raised in the diaspora, describes himself as an “Angolan from the South Bank and an African of Europe”. He is an anti-racism activist, founder of the Consciência Negra collective and part of the Em Luta movement.

According to the organisers, the discussion will also address the pro-Palestine movement in Europe, including what they describe as repression in England and Germany.

Algarve pela Palestina says the aim of the event is to encourage debate and collective action. The group is inviting members of the public to attend, “to discuss, think and organise the essential struggle for a free Palestine and for the end of colonialism.”
