Algarve to host global cancer research leaders, including Nobel laureates

International summer course brings top scientists to train next generation of researchers

The Algarve will host leading figures in cancer research, including two Nobel Prize winners, during an international summer course taking place from May 11 to May 17 at the Vila Galé Ampalius in Quarteira.

The third Curso Internacional de Verão Portugal-EUA em Investigação Oncológica (International Portugal–US Summer Course in Cancer Research) aims to bring together world-renowned scientists to share cutting-edge knowledge with postgraduate students and early-career researchers from Portugal and abroad, the University of the Algarve (UAlg) says in a statement to the press.

The programme will cover key topics in cancer biology, including tumour characteristics, the tumour microenvironment, therapy resistance, cellular plasticity, epigenetics and cancer metabolism. Sessions on career development, scientific communication and funding applications are also planned.

Among the speakers are Nobel Prize in Medicine laureates James P. Allison and William Kaelin Jr., alongside renowned researcher Ronald DePinho, one of the driving forces behind the event and known for his work on cancer, ageing and degenerative disease-related issues.

The initiative promotes close interaction between participants and an international faculty, encouraging knowledge sharing and the creation of research networks, UAlg says. It is also part of the Portugal-USA Cancer Initiative (UPIC), which fosters collaboration between around 20 academic institutions in both countries.

The event is being organised by Katerina Politi, a Professor in the Department of Pathology and Yale Cancer Center at Yale University, and Pedro Castelo-Branco, Vice-Rector at UAlg.

As part of the programme, a public session will take place on May 15 at the University of Algarve, at the Gambelas campus in Faro, starting at 2.30pm.

The session will include public seminars by the invited speakers and a roundtable discussion moderated by the organisers.
