Aljezur bridge deemed structurally safe

Road surface repairs on EN120 planned after concerns raised by mayor

Portugal’s infrastructure authority has clarified that the bridge over the Ribeira de Aljezur on the EN120 national road is structurally safe.

The response follows repeated concerns raised by Aljezur mayor Manuel Marreiros about safety conditions along the EN120.

The mayor first addressed the issue in a meeting on December 15, 2025, according to a council statement. He later sent formal communications on January 26, 2026, and again on February 11, 2026, warning about the deteriorating road surface between the southern entrance to Aljezur – from the junction to Vale da Telha – and the northern exit of the town.

According to the municipality, the degraded road surface could increase the risk of vehicle damage and accidents, including skidding and collisions. The condition of the bridge over the Ribeira de Aljezur was also questioned, with concerns raised about its worn surface and overall state of conservation.

In a reply dated February 13, 2026, Infraestruturas de Portugal (IP) said it carried out an inspection in 2025 and confirmed that the bridge’s structural “integrity is not compromised”.

Regarding the road surface, the company acknowledged deterioration of the wearing layer but said it is not linked to structural problems. A rehabilitation intervention is planned, with scheduling details to be announced in due course.

Aljezur council says it will continue to monitor the situation with IP and follow up on the measures to be implemented.
