Almancil Rotary welcomes new member

Almancil International Rotary Club (AIRC) welcomed its newest member Dr Thomas Kaiser at a recent dinner meeting held at the Conrad Hotel in Quinta do Lago.

A well-known figure in the Algarve, Dr Kaiser was born in Nuremberg, Germany. He studied medicine at the University of Erlangen, graduating in 1980 with a PhD in Intensive Care Medicine.

He later took up posts in Cook County Hospital in Chicago and the Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre in New York. He then attended the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in the UK where he obtained a Diploma in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

He went on to practise medicine in Surrey before moving to the Algarve in 2001, where he joined Dr Robin Thomson at The Family Medical Centre in Quinta do Lago, later moving on to The Family Medical Centre in Vale do Lobo where he continues to practise.

Not content with running a busy practice, Dr Kaiser is Director of the Accident and Emergency Department at the Hospital Particular in Gambelas.

From early childhood, Dr Kaiser was a keen sportsman, first swimming for his county in Bavaria and later playing semi-professional tennis for his club the 1.FC-Nürnberg.

In 1982 he completed a University degree with distinction in tennis coaching from the University of Munich. He continues to play tennis regularly and enjoys running and cycling.

Welcoming Dr Kaiser, AIRC President Volker Biebesheimer praised him for the work he has done as a doctor of medicine and stated that he was an ideal candidate for Rotary, having displayed all the characteristics which would benefit Rotary and, in turn, enable him to enjoy being a Rotarian.
