Benfica confirm negotiations to sign José Mourinho

“Which coach would say no to Benfica? Not me," Mourinho told reporters yesterday after arriving in Lisbon

SL Benfica have officially confirmed they are in talks to sign José Mourinho as their next head coach.

The announcement was made in a statement sent to Portugal’s financial regulator (CMVM), confirming that “negotiations are underway for the hiring of coach José Mário dos Santos Mourinho Félix, which are expected to be concluded soon.”

According to reports, the ‘Special One’ is set to sign a contract until June 2027.

Mourinho had already admitted yesterday that he was in talks with Benfica to take charge at the Lisbon club.

“I left my previous club four weeks ago,” Mourinho told reporters after arriving to Lisbon on Wednesday evening. “If you ask me if I expected to stay until the end of the season without coaching, that’s not in my nature. I didn’t want to say yes to some club that wasn’t the right one, just because I’m a workaholic. When I was faced with the possibility of coaching Benfica, I didn’t think twice about it, in the sense of ‘I’m interested, I’d like it.'”

He continued: “Which coach would say no to Benfica? Not me”.

Sports newspapers in Portugal report that Mourinho is expected to lead Benfica’s training session this afternoon ahead of the club’s Saturday match against AVS SAD.
